How to Cite Artwork Using MLA

To cite a painting, sculpture, or photograph all you need is the artist’s name, the title of the artwork in italics, date it was composed or created, and the artwork’s medium. You must also include the name of the institution or location where the artwork is housed.

Example citation with MLA format:

Mou, Sheng. Recluse Fisherman, Autumn Trees (元 盛懋 秋林漁隱圖 團扇). 1349, fan mounted as an album leaf; ink and color on silk, Metropolitan Museum, New York.
